Debbie Weaver has been a registered nurse since 1975 and has worked fulltime in a variety of settings. Her specialty was critical care and adult health. She has been a nursing educator since 1987 employed by Valdosta State University. In 1999, she decided to change from critical care nursing to end-of-life care. Summer 2000, she earned her PhD in nursing education from Georgia State University. Currently, Debbie teaches fulltime in the adult health courses and works PRN with Hospice of South Georgia.
Debbie's interest in cancer began many years ago but intensified when her mother was diagnosed with Stage IIIC ovarian cancer in 1995. Her mother's struggle with chemotherapy after surgery and ultimate palliative care nine months later became an impetus for her continued interest. Because of that interest, she currently serves on the Bioethics Committee at South Georgia Medical Center to review and approve cancer treatment research protocols. This community service is a wonderful experience and keeps her informed about new treatment possibilities.
Debbie is very interested in health promotion, risk reduction, and health maintenance for individuals and communities. By staying active in the Valdosta/Lowndes area communities and the Berrien county communities, she has access to groups and individuals who are also interested in improving the health of those around them.
