July 19, 2007 - Local Legislators' Efforts Obtain State Funding For Cancer Programs in Southwest Georgia

ALBANY, GA - July 19, 2007 - The Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition, a 33-county collaborative designated to help reduce the burden of cancer in southwest Georgia, announced they have received $250,000 in state funding.

According to Diane Fletcher, CEO of the Coalition, the funding will enable the Coalition to expand existing cancer programs and develop new projects. "We are thrilled to have received this funding because of the great needs of our region and the direct impact this funding will have on local communities."

The incidence of cancer in Southwest Georgia is 35% higher than other areas of the state. Nearly 50% of cancers are diagnosed in later stages, making a full recovery less likely. The Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition is dedicated to ensuring that Southwest Georgians have access to the best cancer education, prevention, screening, treatment and research.

"We are especially grateful for the commitment and support from our local legislators who were instrumental in obtaining this funding. Representative Ed Rynders and Senator Michael Meyer Von Bremen recognized the impact of cancer on the lives of Southwest Georgians and fought passionately to bring resources to our area," said Ms. Fletcher.

The Cancer Coalition recently finished an innovative project in Baker County using community navigation to educate citizens and provide cancer screenings. The successful program was highlighted on a nationally broadcast CNN television special with Lance Armstrong and will be presented at the national CDC Conference next month.

With the additional funding, the Cancer Coalition plans to expand the Navigation and Screening Program into other counties. Funds will also support participation in a statewide cancer care study as well as additional cancer education in our region.

As a breast cancer survivor, Coalition Board Member Ms. Billie Gatewood of Americus understands the importance of bringing cancer resources to the region. "We want everyone to have access to cancer screenings and to quality cancer care close to home," said Ms. Gatewood.
