Frequently Asked Questions

How is your organization different from other cancer organizations?

The Cancer Coalition of South Georgia is the only regional collaborative cancer organization that exclusively serves the people of south Georgia. This is what makes us different from other organizations. Our mission, programs and funding are all focused completely on cancer in south Georgia.

We work in the 31 counties of South Georgia for the benefit of south Georgians, and all funds are used for programs and projects in our local communities. We have a similar cancer control mission as other national and state agencies, but we have our own board of directors. That means we are free to respond quickly to local needs---independent from any national or parent organization.

Another difference is that we are a "neutral" organization. In other words, we are affiliated with many other organizations and we bring resources to all our partners. We facilitate collaboration rather than competition. Many cancer organizations focus only on one type of cancer or one area of cancer control. We are unique in that we cover the entire spectrum, from prevention and promoting healthy lifestyles to cancer screening and early detection to supporting the highest treatment standards and survivorship for all cancer patients. Through our Center to Reduce Cancer Disparities, we develop and conduct programs that reduce the heavier burden of cancer suffered by the poor, minorities, and uninsured residents of our communities. We also use a multifaceted approach, providing research, professional and public education, community outreach and other services---rather than just one modality of service.

Finally, our structure allows us to have a central base, yet the work simultaneously happens on a local level in the communities we serve.
