CPCRN

Scientists are learning more and more about how to prevent cancer. By working with cancer researchers, our Cancer Coalition ensures that people in southwest Georgia benefit from the latest findings.

The Emory Prevention Research Center (EPRC) is a member of the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (CPCRN). As such, they are committed to developing collaborative community research on cancer prevention in southwest Georgia.

CPCRN activities in our area are designed to:

CPCRN

In 2008, the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition worked with CPCRN to host a free Community Health Forum. The Forum provided healthcare professionals and the local public the chance to talk directly with expert researchers about promoting healthy rural communities. More than 100 attendees from across the area discussed nutrition, physical activity in rural communities, why patients do not complete cancer treatment, and other important topics.

Also in 2008, the CPCRN project "Nutrition Programs That Work" awarded $20,000 in grants to organizations to conduct prevention programs in their communities. Recipients were Berrien County Collaborative, Cook County Commission for Children and Youth, Crisp County Community Council Inc., South Georgia Medical Center Diabetes Management Center, and the SOWEGA Council on Aging. Our Cancer Coalition assists the CPCRN team in promoting the availability of these grants to organizations in our region.
