Emory University is designated as a national Prevention Research Center (EPRC) and the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition is the EPRC's primary community partner. This partnership allows EPRC to receive funding for several Special Interest Projects that benefit our region. Examples include the following:
Dr. Joe Lipscomb completed a study at our four regional cancer centers examining patients' completion of cancer treatment. Data was collected on nearly 4000 cancer patients diagnosed in our region and showed that 85% of breast cancer patients and 69% of colorectal cancer patients completed prescribed therapy. The results have been presented at national conferences and the data continues to be analyzed. This pilot study will likely lead to follow up studies in 2009 - 2010.
Dr. Kyle Steenland recently completed another Special Interest Project - a study on quality of life in 300 men in our area with prostate cancer. Data is currently being analyzed and is expected to be published.
An ongoing project is evaluating the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program interventions.
