One notable collaborative project is that of Georgia serving as a first site for a national cancer data initiative. This effort is led by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, the National Cancer Institute and other major organizations.
The project allows local Georgia hospitals to track the quality of their cancer care in "real time" rather than waiting for months or years for this information. For example, physicians and others can easily learn if chemotherapy has been considered or given appropriately for all patients with certain types of breast or colon cancer. Hospitals across the state are then able to compare their outcomes to others in Georgia and in the country, and to change their practices as needed to provide the best care. This information not only will shape local treatment and research, but also will add to state and national cancer outcomes data.
The Regional Cancer Coalitions of Georgia facilitate hospital participation in numerous sites throughout the state, with assistance from Joe Lipscomb, PhD, an Emory University professor and GCC Distinguished Scholar.
